Water meter readings - how to submit them and never forget again
Most overpriced water bills come from one cause: the manager doesn't receive the reading on time and bills you on estimates. Domopay reminds you about readings, keeps your history, and shows how much you actually use - so you only pay for your own water.
How to read a water meter correctly
On a water meter you only record the digits before the decimal - these are full cubic meters (m³). The red digits after the decimal represent liters and are usually not entered into the manager's form. If you have two meters - cold water and hot water - take readings separately for each, ideally on the same day so month-over-month comparisons stay consistent.
How often you need to submit a reading
In most Polish housing cooperatives and housing associations, water readings are submitted quarterly or every six months - the manager sets the deadline and announces it on the noticeboard, by email, or in the resident panel. Missing a reading means an estimated settlement, usually based on the average of previous periods or GUS standards, which is typically more expensive than actual consumption.
Where and how to submit a reading
Most common channels: the manager's online resident panel, email to the administration office, SMS to a designated number, a note dropped at the admin office, or in person during a meter walk. More managers now accept data from apps like Domopay - enter your reading once and the app keeps the history and generates a report you can forward.
What to do about a wrong settlement
If a water bill looks too high, check three things: whether the reading on the invoice matches the current meter value, whether the previous reading wasn't skipped (estimated settlement), and whether the per-m³ rate matches the tariff approved by the municipality. File a written complaint with the manager within 14 days of receiving the settlement - Domopay's reading history is strong evidence in such disputes.
Common questions about water readings
What if I forgot to submit a reading on time?
Contact the manager as soon as possible and submit the current reading - most administrations accept late readings and adjust the estimated settlement to actual consumption. The important part is doing it before the next billing period closes.
Can I take a photo of the meter instead of entering the reading?
A meter photo is good practice as evidence, but most managers still require you to enter the number in their panel or form. Domopay lets you enter the reading and optionally attach a photo to your history.
How does cold water differ from hot water in settlement?
Hot water costs more than cold because the price per m³ includes the energy to heat it. The manager bills both categories separately and requires separate readings from two meters.
What about readings when changing tenant or selling an apartment?
On the day of handover you take a so-called zero reading - record the state of every meter and sign a protocol with the other party. This precisely splits consumption and cost between the previous and new occupant.
